Horny Goat Weed: Modern-day Viagra

This leafy plant is native to Asia and the Mediterranean region and is also known as Epimedium, Barrenwort, Bishop’s Hat, Fairy Wings, Horny Goat Weed or Yin Mang Huo. It is a genus of about 60 or more species of herbaceous flowering plants in the family Berberidaceae. It has been used as a male aphrodisiac in China for over 2000 years, after it was discovered for raising sexual appetite in goats that had consumed the weed. Research is being conducted on the potential benefits of the plant and its side effects which are yet to be discovered. It is however, one of the most popular nutritional supplements in America and is being used by a large number of people throughout the country for various purposes, particularly to increase sexual drive and enhance sexual performance.

Horny Goat Weed is sold as a dietary supplement both in the raw herb form as well as pill form blended with other supplements. It is used to treat erectile dysfunction, kidney, liver, back and joint disorders and is known to have testosterone like effects. It is rising as a famous aphrodisiac and has the capacity to elate sexual drive, increase the production of sperm and charge the sensory nerves.

Mechanism:
The main operating component of Epimedium is icarin, which can be found in standardized extracts from 5% up to 60% potent. It works by increasing the levels of nitric oxide in the body which relaxes and soothes the muscles. Several studies are trying to determine if it is the modern day viagra as like Viagra, the icarin present in Epimedium constricts the activity of PDE-5 enzyme in the body.

Benefits of Horny goat weed: Erectile Dysfunction and Sexual Dysfunction: Going by the ancient Chinese legend, horny goat weed is a powerful aphrodoisiac which owes the discovery of its magical properties to a goat herder who noticed increased sexual activity within the flock after they consumed the weed.  Studies on animals indicate that the weed increases the levels of nitic oxide in the body which aids in relaxation and soothes the muscles thereby enhancing circulation to the penis or clitoris.
Another study points out that its mechanism is similar to that of Viagra. Both act by inhibiting the PDE-5 enzyme in the body. Epimedium is also known to normalize the levels of cortisol, testosterone and thyroid in the body.

Improved Feelings Of Sensation: One of the most prominent benefits of Epimedium is that it is capable of heightening the sensitivity of the sensory nerves leading to a number of sexual benefits including more prominent feelings of sensation during orgasm.

Menopause

In a study Epemedium had the highest estrogenic activity after menopause among 32 other herbs.

Thus, we can conclude that Epimedium has a number of benefits including:

Improved reactiveness of sensory nerves

Increase in the production of sperm

Increase in tetosterone levels

Aids in treatment of kidney and liver diorders

Side Effects: Horny goat weed has been used for over 200 years in traditional medicine for uplifting the libido. It can also inhibit the  cholinesterase enzyme which can increase the risk of muscle loss and co-ordination leading to jittery movements and accidents. Moreover, high doses of icarin may be potentially harmful for the smooth functioning of the kidneys and liver.

The leaves of Epimedium contain flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols and an alkaloid called magnaflorine. It is said to boost sexual activity, provide relief in menopause, treat erectile dysfunction and fatigue related problems. It can be consumed by both men and women. But more research is required to determine its exact benefits and side effects so that it can be utilized in the best possible way to avail maximum benefits.

It is however, recommended that you consult a physician or fitness expert before consuming the supplement in order to avoid any side effects. You must also make note of your present medical condition and consider if you are suffering from any ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, liver infection, stress etc. before taking the product. Never consume any drug without seeking professional advice as this may be potentially harmful. Although, most nutritional supplements are available across the counter, one cannot guarantee their safety.
