HMB Supplements: Preserve Muscle, enhance recovery
Supplementation plays an important role in bodybuilding by enabling the body to meet its specific nutrient requirements. HMB supplements are a rage in the bodybuilding world. They enable bodybuilders to develop lean muscle mass and strength.

HMB is also known as Hydroxy Methyl Butyrate, Beta-Hydroxy-Beta-Methylbutyrate or B-Hydroxy-B-Methyl Butyrate. It occurs naturally in the human body as a by-product of the branched chain amino acid, Leucine. It plays a vital role in the formation of proteins including muscle tissue buildup in the body and is of great importance to bodybuilders and athletes. It is found in minute amounts in animal and plants foods such as catfish, nuts, whole wheat bread, grains and alfalfa.

Leucine comprises of about eight percent of the body’s total amino acid content in the protein structures. It is also the fourth most abundant amino acid found in the skeletal muscle tissue. It is known to supply the body with energy under stress; it preserves muscle glycogen and maintains the nitrogen balance in the body. The body is incapable of synthesizing protein in the absence of this amino acid irrespective of the quantity of protein consumed through diet.

HMB Supplements and Leucine:

HMB is produced when Leucine, breaks down during rigorous exercises performed during weight lifting and bodybuilding. It helps regulate blood sugar, increases the energy level of the body, enhances the production of human growth hormones (HGH), helps heal injury and speeds up the process of repair of muscle tissues. Approximately, 5% of Leucine is converted into HMB in the body.

Leucine is the most effective BCAA for preventing muscle loss. It works by breaking down and converting into glucose more quickly than isoleucine and valine resulting in an increase in glucose supply in the body. This prevents the catabolism of muscles for energy during intense workout sessions and is popular among bodybuilding enthusiasts all across the globe. It also enhances the process of the healing of bones, skin and muscle tissue after traumatic injury and is often given to patients recovering from surgery.

Benefits of HMB supplements:

HMB helps reduce muscle tissue breakdown which occurs during strenuous body building exercises such as weight lifting, endurance training etc. With less muscle tissue to repair the body accelerates the process of recuperation, thereby building more muscle mass.

It raises the body’s ability to burn fat and built muscle mass.

It enhances the process of protein metabolism.

It curtails protein catabolism during rigorous training sessions and results in an increase in muscle mass and strength.

It aids in the prevention of muscle tissue loss.

It may decrease cardio vascular disorders.

It may decrease the LDL cholesterol levels and improve cardio vascular health.

It can also result in a decrease in the risk of heart attacks and stroke. Studies have shown HMB to be a precursor of cholesterol.

HMB boosts the immune system.

It helps preserve muscle tissue and prevents muscle wasting in patients suffering from cancer, or immune deficiency such as AIDS (Acquired Immuno Deficiency syndrome).

Dosage:

The recommended dosage for consuming HMB supplements is 3 g per day for body building enthusiasts and athletes. It is a supplement of choice for a number of bodybuilding enthusiasts as it helps gain muscle, increases energy and aids post workout recovery. During rigorous workout sessions and prolonged exercise, damage to muscle tissues takes place resulting in the breakdown of Leucine and a consequent increase in HMB. It helps reduce the disintegration of muscle tissues to a fairly large extent.

Effects of overdose:

These include diarrhea, nausea, dermatitis, mental disorders, liver and kidney damage.

Before taking any supplements it is essential for you to consult a registered medical practitioner in order to determine if the product is suited as per the specifications of your body or not. You must also make note of any of the diseases or ailments you might be suffering from such as high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, depression, kidney problem, gastro intestinal disease, high cholesterol levels etc. you must also consider your present medical condition before taking the supplement, if you are allergic to any prescription or over the counter (OTC) drugs or have a family history of any ailments. HMB supplements are not recommended for pregnant or lactating women and must not be taken by those suffering from kidney or liver disease.
