L-Glutamine
L-Glutamine is a popular amino acid that occurs naturally in the human body. It is found circulating in the blood and is stored in the skeletal muscles. It plays a vital role in the synthesis of protein and in the bio synthesis of urea in the body. It is essential to take L-Glutamine from food or supplements during injury or illness. It is also known as the powerhouse of the immune system.

Functions of L-Glutamine:

It leads to a positive nitrogen balance in the body which accompanies growth and development during pregnancy.

It is responsible for the conversation of the toxic ammonia to non- toxic urea.

It acts as a substrate for DNA synthesis in the body.

It plays a major role in protein synthesis and release of energy for muscle cells.

It acts as the primary source of fuel for enterocytes (Cells lining the inside of the small intestine).

It is the precursor for rapidly dividing immune cells.

It helps in boosting the immune function of the body.

It regulates the acid balance in kidney by producing ammonium.

It acts as an alternate fuel for the brain.

It helps block cortisol induced protein catabolism.

It is used in the treatment of cancer, injury, burns and trauma.

It aids in the process of muscle growth in bodybuilding, weight lifting and endurance exercises.
It helps in gastro intestinal functions and reduces recovery time.

Benefits of L-Glutamine:

It plays an active role in the process of protein synthesis and prevents the muscle from being catabolized in order to provide glutamine for other cells in the body.

It helps maintain cell volume and hydration.

It speeds up recovery, wound healing and burn healing.

It replenishes declining glutamine levels during instant workout sessions.

It boosts the immune system for bodybuilding enthusiasts. Heavy workouts tend to deplete glutamine levels in the body. L-Glutamine is the main energy source for the immune system and helps fight a number of autoimmune diseases.

It is the most important nutrition for the intestines and maintains the structural health of bowels.

Studies indicate that it is used to cure ulcers.

It enhances the human growth hormone levels of the body.

Dietary Sources of L-Glutamine:

These include beef, meat, fish, chicken, eggs, beans, dairy products, cabbage, beets, spinach, parsley, fermented foods, vegetable juices etc.

Dosage:

The recommended dosage of L-Glutamine is 10 g per day. Bodybuilding enthusiasts must consume 5 g of the supplement before bed time as it helps reduce muscle breakdown and naturally increases the body secretion of human growth hormones (HGH), a powerful anabolic substance leading to the development of lean muscle mass. It should also be taken 30 minutes post workout sessions. After intense exercises, the body’s glutamine stores are famished by 50%. In order to replenish these levels supplements must be consumed.

Before taking any bodybuilding supplements it is essential for you to consult a registered medical practitioner in order to determine if the product is meant for you or not. You must also make note of any ailments you might be suffering from such as diabetes, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, asthma, cancer, liver or kidney disease etc. before consuming any product. Supplementation enables you to meet the body’s specific nutrient requirements but if taken in the wrong quantities or without proper guidance it can have a negative impact on the body.

L-Glutamine helps improve athletic performance and increases muscular strength. The body relies on the nutrients as cellular fuel for the immune system. L-Glutamine supplementation plays an important role in minimizing the breakdown of muscle tissues and augments protein metabolism. A deficiency of the nutrient leads to breakdown of muscle tissue, reduces the pace of recovery and leads to fatigue.

It requires a great deal of determination, perseverance and hard work to ultimately reach your bodybuilding goals. The four aspects of a great bodybuilding regime are exercise, nutrition, recuperation and supplementation. In the absence of any of these it is not possible for you to reach your goals.
