Vitamin B 2 is also known as Riboflavin. It can be easily absorbed by the body, is a popular micronutrient and plays a vital role in maintaining the overall health of the body. It is the main constituent of cofactors FAD and AMN and is required by all flavoproteins. It is involved in a wide range of cellular processes and plays a key role in the metabolism of energy through the synthesis of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

Riboflavin is yellow or yellowish orange in color and is often used as colorant in food. In addition to that, it is also used to fortify various food products such as cereals, baby foods, pastas, processed cheese, fruit cake, milk products, energy drinks, sauces and vitamin supplements. It is present in various multi –vitamins and excess Riboflavin is excreted from the body. It causes the urine to be bright yellow within few hours of ingestion.

A shortage of the vitamin can also be indicated by dermatitis, hair loss, insomnia, dizziness, slow mental responses, poor digestion, unusual light sensitivity and stunted growth. Mild deficiencies are common in alcoholics and are accompanied by vitamin B3 deficiency and the deficiency of thiamine.

Sources of Vitamin B2:

Riboflavin is not stored in a large amount in the body and must be obtained from diet. Food sources rich in vitamin B2 include milk, cheese, yogurt, fish, organ meats, soybeans, legumes, green leafy vegetables, eggs, whole grains and peas. 

Dosage:

The Recommended Daily allowance (RDA) of vitamin B2 is 1.6 mg per day in males and 1.2 mg per day in females. 

Side Effects of Vitamin B2:

There are no side effects of taking the vitamin but extremely high doses can result in burning, numbness, prickling sensations, itching and sensitivity to light.

For best results it is recommended to take riboflavin with B group vitamins, vitamin C and vitamin B6. Foods containing riboflavin should not be contained in clear or glass containers or they will lose their riboflavin content in a short time. Riboflavin is stable when heated but leaches in cooking water.
