Alcohol Consumption Could Be Fatal For The Intestine

January 23, 2009

Alcohol, remain to be one of primary drinks symbolizing fun as well as party atmosphere. Although, a peg or two in a day are not very detrimental to health but chronic alcoholism could lead to some of the most prominent health problems in the longer run. We have informed you about some of th harmful effects that alcohol can have in our previous article, in this article we will try and have a look at some of the effects that alcohol consumption can have on the intestine and metabolism.

What is chronic alcoholism?

From a definition point of view, chronic alcoholism may be defined as a complex disorder which is a combined package of malnutrition, deficiency of vitamins which include important vitamins like thiamin, vitamin B6 and folate. Aprt from this chronic alcoholism is also accompanied by diarrhoea and bowel disturbances.

Causes and mechanism of chronic alcoholic syndromes

A lot of factors and features could be contributing to the disturbances as well as alterations in the intestinal digestion. There can be a lot of possible mechanisms for this kind of effect, among which the disturbance in digestive and intestinal functioning is the major one. This disturbance in intestinal function leads to a dilapidation in absorption and secretion of nutrients.

Ethanol and its effect on the intestine

Ethanol consumption leads to a prominent shortening of the villi in the jejunum. This leads to a very reduced absorption capacity of the intestine. Apart from this the ultra structures of the ileal as wel as jejuna villi may account for a very reduced metabolic activity as well.

Ethanol and toxicity increment

Ethanol is a molecule that transgresses into the gut wall making it more fluid, which increases the chances for the toxns, microbes and pathogens etc. to re enter the blood stream, therefore apart from being degenerative on its own, alcohol can also increment the possibility of toxic effect of other harmful components.

Therefore, it is always appropriate to stay away from too much of alcohol consumption to ensure a health toxin free life.

Interesting article, with good advice, that’s for sure !
If I could just add, that currently there are five (5) most common health afflictions from alcohol consumption, on what was thought by many of us, to be moderate drinking, that being 1-2 stiff drinks per day, is currently now been changed by the Medical Professions here in Canada (Feb 09) to 1-2 per week maximum.

The five afflictions are: (and in no particular order)
    -Grand Mal Seizures
    -Rapidly Progressive Blindness
    -Rapidly Progressive Deafness
    -Rapidly Corroded Livers
    -Heart Attacks
All with no forewarning signs, and all with no cures at this time !

Many of us have been trying, unsuccessfully, to convince Government Officials for the need to legislate mandatory health warning labels on all liquor containers. As we must warn our youth, otherwise, when all us old farts have been dumped of at Seniors Nursing Homes, to be spoon fed & diaperred, who will take over all our many Professions, if our youth have already destroyed their own health & futures by drinking at far too early an age………..?

May God have mercy on us all !
