What is Aloe vera?

In general Aloe vera is generally obtained as a mucilaginous substance from the leaves of the plant Aloe vera. The juice is generally formed after cutting fresh leaves and collecting the exaudate.

It is in general a highly recommended form of Ayurvedic medicine and is also considered as a restorative tonic and a rejuvenative tonic as well. In general, it is important to distinguish and classify them separately from Aloe which has a distinctive yellow colour.

What does Aloe vera do?

Aloe vera gel, has a very prominent and potent wound healing and anti-inflammatory activity. It is also considered to have a very good effect on digestion if taken freshly in the morning and has been acclaimed for its benefits on healing the bodily processes.

Aloe vera has also been found to improve glucose tolerance and enhance lipid metabolism in the body, although the results remain invalidated in case of humans.

Apart from distinct mannan rich polysaccharides, Aloe vera is also rich in a number of antioxidant compounds such as tannins, as well as components like sterols, saponins etc. The plant is also rich in vitamins, mineralsgamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid. The plant is generally considered as nutritive and possess immune-modulatory activity as well.

Existing health and dietary status

The juice obtained from Aloe vera is considered to be safe in general and no specific toxicity problems have been identified so far. Although, there are some interfering results from different research groups regarding the health benefits that are commonly associated with Aloe vera gel. It is always recommended that a physician advice is taken before beginning on any dietary supplement schedule.
