Avoid Stress to Remain Lean and Prevent Obesity
December 18, 2008
Stress in various forms, can be described as a condition in which we experience a short term burst of energy, although, what is compromised under stressed conditions is, the long term health aspect. Stress can be defined as an excessive overload, which can be from a physical, emotional or metabolic point of view. Interestingly enough, the stressful conditions leads to a sudden adrenalin rush, resulting in a very fast consumption of glucose and stored fat.
Once the emergency is over, the hormone cortisol takes over the whole metabolic process leading to a faster fat deposition. Since, the craving for food is generated as a result of increased cortisol levels hence, a carbohydrate rich diet which may include junk foods, soft drinks etc. is what we generally prefer to consume. This is the reason where the obesity and excessive fat deposition creeps into the picture.
Stress affects the immunity in a negative way
In terms of negative effects on the body, stress results in a outward flow of energy from the immune system. Since, the whole body defence mechanism and the immune system needs a lot of energy from the metabolic processes, hence a diversion from the normal energy flow from the immune system leads to irreparable damages. Although, it is also important to understand that the bodily stresses for a short period do not have a very prominent effects whilst a continous exposure to a longer period of time may have serious long lasting consequences.
A few diseases most commonly associated with stress include stroke, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. It is also an interesting fact that a major cause of obesity and lack of fitness is stress and continous susceptibility to stressful conditions.
Aerobic exercises are an excellent approach to avoid stress
It is one of the most scientifically illustrated fact that physical exercise is the best option to release tension. An effective means to do so is by performing aerobic exercises, these may be in the form of swimming, stretching, cycling or brisk walking. A very good stress buster, aerobics are more than effective to improve bodily fitness apart from improving performance levels. We can relieve stress with aerobic exercises in a effective way.
