Strength training is exercise that uses resistance to strengthen and condition the musculoskeletal system, improving muscle tone and endurance. “Strength training” is used as a general term synonymous with other common terms: “weightlifting” and “resistance training.”Strength Training Benefits

Healthy bones through exercise

Regular weight bearing exercise and strengthening work can help prevent osteoporosis. Stronger bones lead to a stronger musculoskeletal system-that means you can lift, move and enjoy recreational activities with more ease.

Great posture through muscle conditioning- Conditioned muscles help you lift and hold your body upright better. As a result, you appear taller, more confident and vibrant.

Working your muscles can also inhibit the affects of sarcopenia, the age related loss of muscle mass, strength and function. After the age of thirty there is a loss of 3-5% of muscle mass per decade, making day to day tasks gradually harder to perform and slowing down metabolism - increasing the risk of weight gain.

Insomnia

Those who strength train on a regular basis get a better night’s sleep and are less likely to suffer from insomnia. Sleep benefits of strength training are comparable to those obtained with medication, but without the side effects.

Mood

Studies have found that strength training can be as effective in treating depression as anti-depressant medications. Researchers don’t yet know whether this is because strength training causes biochemical changes in the brain or because people feel better psychologically when their bodies are stronger.

Strength Training Benefits Cycling Performance

After 8 weeks of strength training, one repetition maximum for the hack squat significantly increased by 90 ± 33% when compared to before training. However, 8 weeks of strength training did not increase the maximal accumulated O2 deficit. Nevertheless, after 8 weeks of strength training, there was a significant increase in time to exhaustion for cycling at 120% VO2peak. The increase in time to exhaustion after 8 weeks of strength training was accompanied by a significant increase in accumulated O2 uptake.

Benefits Of Golf Strength Training

Strength training is the obvious solution for taking your golf game to the next level. The benefits of golf-specific strength training have been well documented. Golfers have significantly increased their driving distance, lowered their handicaps, and reduced injuries. Therefore, it is advantageous for golfers of all ages and fitness levels to start a strength training program.

Getting started

Many community and senior centers offer exercise and weight-training classes designed specifically for older people or women. Too busy to make it to the gym? No excuse. After mastering the basic moves many exercises can be performed at home. And, even some everyday activities can count towards body building exercise. Walking up stairs and raking leaves can give muscles a workout, too. Given that strength training can be done anywhere and anytime, why not start now? Your continued strength depends on it.
