Chondroitin Sulphate a Popular Dietary Supplements
November 17, 2008
The focus of nutrition research has shifted to the quality of the diet and this has lead to many revelations in the field of dietary supplements. As we all are aware, some foods, such as those high in saturated and trans fats, have negative effects on health, whereas foods such as fruits and vegetables have positive effects.
Scientists are also examining individual nutrients and other substances with potential health-promoting properties. Although deficiencies can be avoided by consuming adequate nutrients, it is unclear whether health can be optimized by consuming more than the established adequate nutrient levels. Included in this category of a health supplement is Chondroitin sulphate. In this article we would try to evaluate the benefits as well as harmful effects of chondroitin sulphate as a nutraceutical ingredient.
What is chondroitin sulphate ?
Chondroitin sulphate is a natural structural component of cartilages. It is a sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) composed of a chain of alternating sugars (N-acetylgalactosamine and glucuronic acid). Chondroitin was first extracted and purified in the early 60’s. At present the major sources of chondroiting sulphate include natural sources like shark, beef cartilage. It is also obtained from bovine trachea. Advancements in glycobiology have also resulted in the availability of various synthetic procedures for the preparation of Chondroitin sulfate.
What are the benefits of Chondroitin sulphate ?
In general, the researchers are unequivocal regarding the efficacy of chondroitin for improving symptoms and stopping (or possibly reversing) the degenerative process of osteoarthritis. Although, there have been some contradictions to these findings, still most of the experimentation supports the use of chondroitin sulphate in osteo-arthritis. Chondroitin sulphate is also considered to be useful in improving cartilage strength in individuals involved in body building processes. Some researchers have also reported the possible use of chondroitin sulphate is improving the lean muscle and body mass.
In totality, chondroitin sulphate holds a lot of potential to be explored as a useful nutraceutical ingredient for generalized health promotion and bone health building effect.
