Conjugated Linoleic Acid A Weight Loss Supplement

Conjugated Linoleic acid (CLA) is a group of nearly 13 different isomers of trans fatty acids. The CLA’s are mainly found to be prominent in dairy and meat products. Commercially CLA is prepared by alkaline isomerization of linoleate rich oils such as sun-flower oil. Conjugated linoleic acid has been associated with a lot of health benefits, and is considered to be very important component of diet for weight loss. Conjugated linoleic acid first came into the scientific horizon after the demonstration of its ability of fighting against all stages of cancer. An increased scientific awareness prompted researchers to have a closer look on other health benefits of this compound. A closer insight into some of the functionalities of Linoleic acid are discussed in this article.

Researchers from Department of Laboratory Animal Science , Utrecht University, Netherlands have evaluated the scientific data available on the usefulness of CLA’s in weight loss functionality. Their review clearly indicated that in certain cases CLA may reduce the high density lipids i.e HDL’s which are a potent cause of obesity and fat deposition. Another important attribute of CLA is that while it may not directly influence the body weight loss but once the dieting period is over CLA taken regularly in diet may have two fold benefits. Firstly, it reduces the chances of gaining the bad fat i.e HDL etc. Secondly, it ensures an increase in muscle gain and improvement in fitness.

Linoleic acid has been attributed with potent antioxidant properties. Anti-oxidants are an important facet in having a healthy and fit body. The prevention of free radical generation assists in reducing chances of becoming obese and also improves body performance during stressful conditions.

Whole milk, beef, lamb and other meat products are a potent source of CLA’s. There are number of dietary supplements rich in Conjugated Linoleic acid available in the market as well. Researchers working in this direction have shown that it would always be a better choiceto have CLA’s in regular diet rather than consuming them in the form of pills.
