Dietary Supplements Some Important Points You Must Know

As we all know that vitamins and minerals are very prominently valued, well studied and prominent dietary components, similarly herbal and botanical dietary supplements are also considered as putative and important natural source of health and well being. But before you begin to use these substances blindly and without giving an afterthought, remember that theses substance generally bypass the mandatory laws and regulations. It is important for us to know the potential lacuna in the concept of dietary supplements, in order to have a better health and also to ensure that what we consume is actually healthy and helpful for our health.

Inconsistency in case of dietary supplements

A lot of herbal drugs, especially rich in antioxidant components and flavonoids are considered as active and used as dietary supplements. Whilst, it is now determined and proven scientifically that the activity of such substance is highly variable and inconsistent carrying for person to person.

Lack of evidence and appropriate information

Some of the dietary supplements do not have the required scientific backing and support to validate their usage or justify their inclusion in the category of dietary supplement. A very good example of lack of information regarding dietary supplement includes L-carnitine. Although , carnitine is widely promoted for its beneficial use in cardiovascular disease, neurological diseases, depressed immunity, and obesity, still there is not even a single scientific study with appropriate statistical stature to confirm the use of l-carnitine for the aforementioned purpose.

Internet adds to the opulence of unreliable information

With the advent of cyber revolution, the popularity of dietary supplement has seen an unprecedented popularity. Although, we do not want to interpret the internet revolution in a wrong form, but it is now proven that most advertised dietary supplements are not as wonderful as they may be advertised on the website. Also, important in this context is the fact that this misinformation leads to major health complications as well as health problems.

A word of caution

Flooding of market with newer dietary supplements makes it very important for the consumers to become more aware about the shortcomings and health problems that these substances may cause, hence stay informed about the appropriateness of the dietary supplements and make a selection only after proper medical consultation.
