Excessive Antioxidants Could Be A Problem Rather Than A Solution
In most of the reports and popular advertisements promoting weight loss supplements, body building supplements, as well as other natural health boosters, there is one thing which is in common and that usually is the antioxidant potential of these compounds. In general it is a common misconception that antioxidants are one of the sole contributors to health and fitness, and antioxidants taken in any dose or quantity would only benefit our body without harming in any way.
As in our previous article on vitamins, we would throw some light on the role of antioxidants and also try and have a look at the good, the bad and the ugly side of excessive consumption of antioxidants.
Common misconceptions about antioxidants
It is always believed that the antioxidants are safe and health promoting.
The truth
It could be justified that taking antioxidants could be beneficial in prevention of certain disease symptom, they may also be beneficial in ameliorating certain chronic ailments like heart disease, cancer, but as far as the scientific output and research concerning over consumption is concerned, there is no information justifying that over consumption of antioxidants could benefit in any way what so ever.
The bad and the ugly part
Researchers have tried to evaluate the role of excessive intake of certain antioxidant supplements, and the harm that this may cause, in their research they found out that excessive intake of Vitamin E with potent antioxidant potential may lead to an increased chance of stroke. In another interesting research output, it was justified that beta carotene which is another dietary supplement with lot of popularity in preventing cancer apart from building lean muscle mass could infact be a contributing factor to lung cancer in smokers.
On the whole, it can be a justified conclusion that a balance of nutraceuticals and dietary supplements is a must and it is always better to decide on consuming certain substances only after prior literature search and evaluation.
