Exercise For Improving The Nasal Breathing And Respiratory Fitness
January 7, 2009
As a basic student of biology, we have all learnt the fact that we breathe through our nose, but you would be startled to know that 60-70% of the population does not breathe solely from the nose, but use the mouth to breathe as well. Breathing from the mouth is not a good symptom for the fitness of the body, and it is very important that our nose does its job from a health point of view. We have already been throwing light on breathing exercises and their putative benefits on your health, well being. In the same context, we would throw some light on important nasal breathing exercises, firstly to make you a nasal breather and secondly to evaluate your breathing performance on routine basis.
How to become a nasal breather?
In order to perform this exercise, and evaluate your nasal breathing performance, lie down on your back, close your mouth tightly and have it closed till you finish the exercises. While you are lying down on your back, start inhaling through your nose , taking long gasping breathes inside. It is mandatory that you keep your mouth shut while you are doing this activity.
After filling in the air completely, try to hold your breath at least upto a normal count of 10. As you start to feel a little tensed, exhale through your nose in an even longer steady breath. While exhaling tighten your your abdominal muscles as if trying to exhale out even the last traces of gas from your body. Your stomach must be pressed to the extent that you may even feel that your naval region is almost touching back your spine.
Perform this activity in a normal way for at least 2-4 times. Once you exhale out and relax, you would observe how your body squeezes back air automatically through the nose. While, this exercise is also benefiting for improving the lung’s air capacity, it is also very useful in forming the habit of nasal breathing.
Nasal breathing advantages
This exercise is useful to clear the nasal passage and is therefore helpful in reducing the snoring and discomfort caused therein. Also nasal breathing is a better way to feed the lungs with cleaner air as the nostrils helps in clearing the air of fine particles, this improves respiratory performance as a whole.
