Importance of Magnesium Supplement

March 26, 2010

Your body needs magnesium for performing over three hundred biochemical functions. Although several common fruits and vegetables supply this essential mineral to your body, the content of magnesium in most foods is not enough to meet your regular magnesium requirement. To restore the magnesium deposit in your body, you should consume a large amount of whole grains and at least five servings of a variety of vegetables and fruits everyday.Despite access to a wide range of nutritious foods, the risk of magnesium deficiency could not be ruled out. Deficiency of this essential mineral is common even among people attuned to healthy dietary habits. If you fail to get enough magnesium from your regular diet, you can rely on magnesium supplements to meet your magnesium requirement.

Who should take magnesium supplement?
Magnesium deficiency could occur if your body loses too much water through excess urination, perspiration, vomiting and diarrhea. People suffering from dehydration should take magnesium supplements to replenish the depleted magnesium reserve. People on diuretics and certain antibiotics and cancer medications tend to lose magnesium through urine. Abnormally high blood sugar level promotes magnesium loss through urine.

Magnesium supplements are usually recommended for diabetics for preventing magnesium deficiency. You need excess magnesium in the form of magnesium supplements, if you are suffering from chronic health disorders such as Crohn’s disease, which reduces absorption of nutrients. Excess alcohol intake could lower the magnesium level in the body.

Magnesium supplement could reduce the risk of hypertension, heart diseases, stroke, diabetes and osteoporosis. It could fight depression and treat PMS symptoms in women.

Magnesium supplement dose
Magnesium supplements are available in the form of tablets, capsules, syrup and powder. 280 to 300 mg of elemental magnesium is sufficient for adult women. Adult men might need between 270 to 400 mg of elemental magnesium. Do not take magnesium supplements on empty stomach.

Side effects of magnesium supplements
Magnesium supplements are usually safe for your health when taken under the supervision of your physician. However, excess magnesium might cause kidney disorder by increasing the magnesium content in the blood. People suffering from heart ailments should consult their cardiologist before taking magnesium supplements.
