Key To Determining The Fitness Levels

November 4, 2008

With growing health consciousness being healthy isn’t just about being a certain weight. It’s about having all the systems of your body performing at optimum levels for as long a time as possible. It’s easy to be at an acceptable weight but have unacceptably high fat percentages, cholesterol or blood sugar. It is very important for us to have a better understanding about the body and also to determine the bodies fitness levels. We are hopeful that by understanding a few key terminologies you would certainly be able to have a better information about your bodies state of activity and fitness.

Importance of the Body Fat–to–Lean Muscle Ratio

This is a very important parameter and its evaluation is considered as vital by most of the fitness experts across the globe. Even though most people equate being over fat with how many pounds they weigh, the scale does not tell the whole story. While scale weight is certainly an important factor and will give you some information about your general health, it is even more important for you to determine your body composition i.e. how many pounds of fat you carry in relationship to the pounds of lean muscle mass. For an example, a less than 10% body fat is an indicator of an athletic body while a body fat level reaching up to 25% or above is considered to be obese and fat.

There is a variation in male to female body fat ratios. In case of female the % could be a little higher as compared to males. In totality, a high body-fat to lean mass is an indicator of unfit obese body, while a high lean muscle mass and low body fat is an indicator of fit and athletic body. In both the cases the body weight may remain to be same.

In this sequence we will continue to have a look at some of the other parameters determining the body fitness and physical acitivity in the forthcoming articles.
