Osteoporosis A Degenaritive Disease of Bones
In case of post menopausal or even the elderly a continuous loss of bone mass as well as cancellous bone mass lifetime lose about a third of cortical bone mass and half of cancellous bone mass. This loss from the skeleton was confirmed after a thorough research by Riggs and Melton.
What is osteoporosis?
It remains to be one of the major health problems in women and can be defined as a disease in which, there is a prominent reduction in the bone mass along with deterioration of bones small compartments and their structure. This loss of bones micro units may be the cause of an excessive fragility of the bone. These kind of bones are highly susceptible to fracture. The agony of such a fragile bone is such that you may have a fracture or complete bone disruption even if you fall from a standing height.
Types of osteoporosis
There are basically two kinds of osteoporosis that can be classified.
Type I is mainly found in case of older women from 50-75 years of age and is mainly due to an exaggerated rate of oestrogen production. Type II is a common occurrence in both males and females above the age of 70. In both cases the bones become too fragile and are susceptible for an easy fracture.
Vitamin D and K the important key
Both Vitamin D and K are considered very important for the bone metabolism, apart from regulating the bone strength these vitamins have also been implicated in having a feedback inhibition or control over all the estrogen production in aged females. A proper calcium rich diet, minerals, egg, milk and calcium rich supplements along with vitamin D and K are one pof the potential treatments of osteoporosis.
The proper diet as mentioned, would ensure that no further bone loss or degradation takes place in the normal course.
It is very important to understand the severity of bone related disorders at an early age i.e. around 40 so that problems in the later half of the life may be averted.
