Thyroid Supplements For Healthy Thyroid

March 31, 2010

Taking thyroid supplements is not a permanent solution to your thyroid problem. These nutritional supplements are meant to supplement your thyroid medications, and not to supplant them. Thyroid supplements supply essential nutrients needed for proper thyroid function. They also help to cure the symptoms of thyroid malfunction such as obesity, fatigue, dryness of the skin and depression.

Best supplements for boosting thyroid function
Iodine

Iodine is needed for the production of the thyroid hormone. Thyroid malfunction could develop from iodine deficiency. Iodine supplements could help to meet your regular iodine requirement, needed for proper functioning of the thyroid gland. About 100 mcg of iodine is usually sufficient for supporting normal thyroid activity.

However, thyroid supplements should be taken with caution. While less iodine intake might slow down secretion of thyroid hormones, excess iodine could cause immense harm to your body. It is advisable to take iodine supplements, only if you are suffering from iodine deficit thyroid problems. A healthy person should try to meet most of their iodine requirement through iodine rich foods such as seafood and iodized salt. Iodine supplements might be beneficial for people on salt and seafood restricted diet.

Zinc
About 200 mcg of elemental zinc is sufficient for restoring normal thyroid function. Zinc plays an important role in secretion of thyroid hormones. Zinc supplements might be needed by both hyper and hypothyroidism sufferers. People with hyperthyroidism or overactive thyroid glands should combine zinc with copper and iron.

Selenium
Selenium is another trace element needed for production of T-4 thyroid hormone. It is even necessary for converting T-4 to T-3. If you fail to meet your selenium requirement from your regular diet, dietary supplements capable of providing about 200 mcg of selenium each day could keep your thyroid gland in good health.

Vitamins
Vitamins D and E are needed for sustaining the normal activities of the thyroid gland. Vitamin D deficiency is common among people living in temperate latitudes. Vitamin supplements containing at least 800 IU of vitamin D is beneficial for preventing thyroid malfunction. Vitamin E supplements might be useful in reducing the risk of thyroid diseases. A good multivitamin supplement containing all the essential vitamins as well as minerals is usually beneficial for retaining normal thyroid activities.
