Vitamin D A Necessity For Muscular Strength

Vitamin D is very well known for its bone-building attributes which have been well established by scientific research and clinical trials. Vitamin D has a lot of beneficial effects and a few of these includes it’s usefulness in building bone and muscle health, a few such features are elaborated here.

Vitamin D: types and metabolism

Vitamin D is popularly known as calciferol. It has been basically classified into five major types viz. Vitamin D1-D5. The most abundant and common in occurrence are Vitamin D2 known as ergocalciferol and Vitamin D3 (cholcalciferol). Vitamin D is a pro-hormone which converted into its most active metabolite 1,25-dihydroxy calciferol in the presence of enzymes.

Vitamin D and muscle health

In a research study conducted at Tufts University (USDA Human Nutrition Research Centre, America) the researchers clearly demonstrated that the muscle health is dependent on circulating Vitamin D levels in the body. Vitamin D receptors are present in muscle tissues and these receptors play in important role in absorption of Vitamin D in its active form. Higher level of Vitamin D in the muscle tissue had a direct positive relationship with improved musculo-skeletal function.

Natural food substances rich in Vitamin D

Vitamin D is not available very commonly and there are only few sources available naturally. These sources of Vitamin D include beverages like milk, soy drinks, and margarine. Other sources for non-vegetarians may also comprise of fish, liver, and egg yolk.

Vitamin D supplementation

Vitamin D supplementation is necessary for athletes and body builders as well as for people involved in extensive physical labour. A 500-800 IU of Vitamin D3 intake on daily basis is the minimum basal level required . There are lot of supplements available commercially, and depending on proper advice of a physician, one of these could be selected to meet the body demand if the regular diet is not fulfilling it. A better Vitamin D fortification would certainly ensure a better muscular and skeletal strength.
