Walking With Good Posture

July 11, 2009

Walking is an activity that we do daily. It is often a neglected part of daily movement.

If you have embarked on a morning walk fitness program then there are some things to keep in mind like body posture, arm movement etc. You can easily improve your walk with these tips:

When walking, do not crouch-walk

Crouch walking is often a habituated style of walking for lots of people, who walk with bags of luggage slung across their shoulders. Crouch walking is actually an inhibitory style of walking, as it does not allow your lungs to work in full capacity. It actually suppresses the lungs, in such a way that your breathing is half-complete.

Don’t keep your eyes down

When walking, don’t keep your eyes down. Keep your eyes focused forward. Don’t look upwards and walk though, as you may trip and fall over something! Keep your head in a horizontal position.

Don’t walk with a closed-chest

Try to walk with an open-chest always. For this you will need to move back your shoulder a little as you walk. Try not to protrude your chest in an effort to get that open-chest walk, as it may look awkward when you walk.

Keep your arms close and cozy

Your arms should sway in line with your body movement, not astray. Have a limited, controlled sway movement, trying to keep your arms close to your body. The arms should be free and relaxed. Do not clench your fist while walking.

Don’t walk like Charlie Chaplin!

In a walking motion, the legs should come in front if you, rather than sideways. The right leg should come in line with the right shoulder, and the left leg with the left shoulder. Don’t overdo this motion though, as it might turn out that you are doing a catwalk!

If you have problems walking straight, you can use walking poles to get your walking in place. Nordic walking poles are a good option, as they provide a good grip on the ground.
