Walking Workouts

March 25, 2010

Why should you limit your workouts to complicated high-intensity physical exercises? Workouts can be simple and as easy as walking. You can burn sufficient amount of calories only by following a regular walking workout routine. Walking workouts will not only melt your fat, but it can even effectively tone your muscles. A properly designed walking workout schedule will help you to burn more than 1000 calories every week.

Walking workout schedule
If you aim to burn at least 1000 calories per week, you should walk for about 45 minutes each day for at least five days a week. During each walking session, you are expected to burn about 240 calories.

Walking workouts for beginners
If you’ve not slogged in the gym before, it would be difficult for you to attain the desired walking speed. Beginners should gradually accustom themselves to the walking workout.

In the first week, you should walk at a comfortable pace for about 15 minutes for about three to four days a week. Every week gradually increase the duration of the workout while maintaining the comfortable walking pace. On the fifth week, you should walk at a comfortable pace for at least 30 minutes, five times a week.

Increase your walking speed from the sixth week. On the sixth week, walk at a faster pace, two to three times a week, and walk at a comfortable pace for the remaining days of the week. Gradually keep on increase the number of days when you will walk at a vigorous speed. After about two months, you should walk at a speed of 4 miles per hour for at least 20 minutes, three to four times a week, and at a comfortable speed for 45 minutes, two to three times a week.

To ensure that you are moving on the right track with your walking workout, you should walk at least 10,000 steps each day or cover 4.5 to 5 miles per day.

It can be quite tiresome to maintain a vigorous pace throughout the walking session. To make your workout more comfortable, start walking at an easy pace for about ten minutes, followed by brisk walking, and gradually slowing down in the last ten minutes.
